Project Overview

U.S. Air Force Services Family Member Programs are interested in actively recruiting student interns from high quality university education programs. These interns will support the present staffing levels at base child and youth development programs. An internship experience could potentially lead to future employment within the military childcare system.
Recruitment of childcare and youth staff on U.S. Air Force bases offers special challenges. Often recruitment of new child and youth development graduates is hindered by lack of familiarity with the military system. Many university faculty and students are not aware of the high quality standards maintained by the Air Force child and youth development programs and the many opportunities for professional training, growth, and advancement.
The National Network for Child Care (NNCC) representing a vast network of professional educators from the university land grant system, and the USDA Cooperative Extension System worked with the U.S. Air Force to address the recruitment and retention issue of base child and youth development programs. This U.S. Air Force Child & Youth Development Internships web site provides an opportunity for university students to explore possible internships with Air Forces child development programs and to apply for available positions. URL is www.nncc.org
The Internship Project was piloted regionally in six states. USAF Services worked cooperatively with the land grant universities and one 1890 institution. Participating universities and Air Forces Bases were University of Idaho, College of Southern Idaho and Mountain Home AFB, The University of Georgia, Fort Valley State University and Robins AFB, Kansas State University and McConnell AFB, University of Massachusetts and Hanscom AFB, University of Missouri and Whiteman AFB; and Rutgers The State University of New Jersey and McGuire AFB.
The U.S. Air Force funded the project through the USDA, NNCC and Kansas State University. Project administration and web site resided at the University of Idaho Extension 4-H Youth Development Program.
