Research has focused on U.S. Department of Energy's subsurface science issues working at Hanford, WA for the Basalt Waste Isolation Project and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, and for the last 12 years at the Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory (INEEL). Dr. Smith is a principal investigator in the Environmental Management Science Program (EMSP) and the Natural and Accelerated Bioremediation Research Program (NABIR). Currently he is exploring the applicability of centrifuge techniques to investigate biogeochemical processes under variably saturated conditions.
