The Oregon Trail Camp!

Also during the summer of 1999, the Grangeville Kids Klub held an Oregon Trail Camp.  Those involved learned all about how the west was settled, including the daily treks involved and what routes were taken.  Instructional learning makes students hungry, though, so they also learned all about the food eaten during the time period.  Snacks were beef jerky, rabbit stew, and some other delicious treats! (Perhaps not all the students thought they were delicious, but most did!)

The camp was a week long, and participants were also introduced to the computer game Oregon Trail II which simulates the actual journey and some of the problems associated with cross country travel in covered wagons.  They had to buy all supplies and make appropriate judgments during the trip to avoid disaster.   And perhaps the most entertaining aspect of it all was the hunting.  (All simulated, of course)

The Kids Klub had a great deal of success with this camp, and hope to pursue future ideas that will provide entertaining education and good fun!
