Leila Old  (1916-2004)

Leila Old was born in Fillmore, CA in 1916. Her father owned a citrus grove. Her mother was a homemaker who owned a children's wear shop, Baby Togs.

 

Scholar

After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Art Education in 1937, Leila taught school in Pasadena. She received a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Southern California in 1942, with her thesis title "The Evolution and Art Significance of Pyrotechnics." She taught high school art classes in Hawaii in 1946 and Alaska in 1947. She received a second bachelor's degree from Oregon State University in 1948 in Home Economics. 

 

Teacher

Leila moved to Pullman, WA where she taught Home Economics at WSU from 1949-1967. Her classes included: clothing construction, pattern making, tailoring and weaving.

 

Radio and Television

From early 1956 to September 1958 Leila presented a weekly radio program called "Your Busy Neighbor." In the early 60's, Leila began experimenting with filmed and televised demonstrations of making clothing. She received her doctor of education in 1967. That same year she accepted a faculty appointment at the University of Idaho. She co-authored a textbook to be used as a resource for pattern making. Leila always enjoyed what she was doing and took pride in what she was able to teach. Her interest in textiles inspired her assemble a collection of historical clothing and artifacts at the University of Idaho.

 

Mother

Leila blended her career with family life as she raised three children.
