The Mission

There is a growing national interest in the significance of everyday garments to the understanding of our social and cultural history.

 

The Leila Old Historic Costume Collection, gathered from residents of Idaho, alumni, and friends of the University, reflects the clothing a cross section of lower, middle, and upper class society in Idaho, in good times and bad, from around 1850 to the present.

 

d Resource for learning and research for students and faculty of the School of Family and
    Consumer Sciences at the University of Idaho.

 

d Studying garments and accessories heightens the understanding of social, economic,
    and cultural spirit of a given time.

 

d The Collection provides and opportunity for students to learn techniques of textile
    conservation, storage,
 display, and museum methods of accessioning and documentation.

 

This maroon athletic sweater belonged to Wynne Longteig (U of I, BS Ag 1942). The black "M" on the white "I" shows that he was team manager. The gold I pin has a silver figure of a baseball player. Maroon and white were used for sweaters for athletes and cheerleaders in the first half of the 1900s. The beanies are from the same period were gray and yellow ("silver and gold").
