EDSP461—Early Childhood Special Education Curriculum

Course Description: Overview of typical and atypical infant and child development; instructional strategies for working with infants, toddlers and young children through third grade, linking assessment to curriculum, designing instructional programming for natural settings and formal settings; involving families, collaboration among professionals, working with volunteers and paraprofessionals.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of current recommended practices in early childhood special education

  2. Demonstrate knowledge of major service delivery and curricular models in early childhood special education

  3. Understand the role of early childhood special educators within the larger service delivery system, and the roles of families and professionals from related disciplines

  4. Demonstrate knowledge of the scope, developmental sequence, and inter-relationships of curricular content across various curricular domains and strategies for selecting, developing, and implementing an individualized functional curriculum for young children with disabilities

  5. Identify and implement programming, scheduling, instructional, and naturalistic teaching strategies and evaluation methods that facilitate effective instruction in natural settings
