FCS210—Introduction to Early Childhood Education

Course Description: An introduction to the field of early childhood education and development, with a focus on working with typically and atypically developing young children.

Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course, students will:

1.       Know basic characteristics of development for children from birth through age eight.

2.       Know how age, individual characteristics, and culture influence practices.

3.       Know the influence of family on early development.

4.       Be aware of elements of early childhood environments that are inclusive of all children's needs and rights, despite race, religion, ethnicity, family situations, special needs, gifts, or challenges.

5.       Recognize a variety of learning styles.

6.       Be familiar with programs and services in early childhood education and intervention.

7.       Recognize characteristics of a high quality early childhood environment.

8.       Have a beginning understanding of professionalism in early childhood education.

9.       Express a beginning teaching philosophy.

10.     Know skills to access information and resources in early childhood field.

11.     Know the role of Idaho Early Learning Standards as tool for developing curriculum.

12      Develop a professional portfolio that includes documentation of the student’s professional competencies.
